Aims

The French Observatory of Food Quality (Oqali) meets one of society’s needs: to ensure overall monitoring of the food supply by measuring changes in nutritional quality (nutritional composition, portion sizes, nutritional information). In order to ensure that the progress which is made will benefit all consumers, collected data on the nutritional quality of food products is analyzed on the basis of socio-economic parameters (prices, market segments).

The Observatory has the following aims:

    collect and analyze nutritional and socio-economic data related to food products ;

    monitor the changes in the nutritional quality of the food supply by including retrospective dimensions to as great a degree as possible ;

    clarify and assess public and private interventions with a view to ensuring a constant improvement of the food product supply ;

    support initiatives which favor the adoption of strategies aiming to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply ;

    establish a platform for the centralization and exchange of data provided by the different stakeholders: consumer associations, manufacturers, retailers, public authorities.

Data analyses of the food supply are conducted on the basis of food sectors and involve the study of transformed food products. A differentiation is made according to different market segments (national brands, store brands, discount brands) and different price ranges (low-price, mid-range, high range).
